Our clinicians are PMHNP-BCs with full California prescriptive authority including Schedule II controlled substances, so methylphenidate and amphetamine-based medications are genuinely on the table. Non-stimulant options such as atomoxetine and guanfacine are too.
Not on the first visit, as a default rule. The standard is a thorough evaluation first — including reviewing prior records where they exist — and then starting a controlled substance at a follow-up. Exceptions exist when the clinical picture clearly warrants one. Your clinician will explain the reasoning behind every prescribing decision, including a no.
After that: a 30-day supply with enough refills to bridge to your next scheduled follow-up. Controlled substances are never auto-refilled, so the follow-up cadence is real rather than administrative.
